Iām going to try to make this a habit. I seem to work on hangs in spurts, but drop them when time runs short. But, grip strength is one thing that correlates to longevity when considering all cause mortality. As old as Iām getting to be, I need every advantage! š
Such a great idea for the fitness challenge. I was a gymnast as a kid/teenager, so I would love to get back into hanging. Unfortunately, I exercise at home (rental apartment) and can't justify buying a gym membership I know I won't use š I'm guessing there aren't any modifications for this--hanging is hanging, right š So, I'll await next month's challenge to rejoin!
Sounds good Sheridan! There are door frame pull-up bars or various contraptions you can buy/build for a bar.
Another modification would be farmers carrying. A good goal is to see if you can hold a 1/2 of your weight in each hand for a minute or more. Iām 160 lbs so that would be 80lbs/hand. Dial it back to 1/4 per hand initially and build up.
Dumbbells/KBs work or you can fill buckets with sand/gravel for a cheaper option.
That being said, nothing wrong with a month off šš»
Okay! I am going to do this challenge. My husband made me a steel pull up bar today that we will install in our hall (It is handy having a welder around). I am almost 64 and have been doing a power pilates class twice a week for the past three years but have never been able to do a pull up. It is on my bucket list of things I want to acheive before I die.
Letās go Amanita! This is a great foundation to set for the eventual pull-up I look forward to you doing! Check your messages in substack, Iāll send you a previous post I did on pull-up progression training too
I would like to join in. This is one of the hardest things to start doing without joining a gym. Not having the bar is the problem. I have tried the ones that go over the doorway, and Iāve wrecked some drywall and door trim with one of those. Any suggestions for a guy that lives on the road in a rental apartment for half of every week?
Haha Iāve done the same thing with the door frame systems!
Get a stud finder and physically install a pull-up bar will be your best and most cost-effective strategy. Based on your ceiling height, there are also various types of workout gear with a pull-up bar incorporated
I had to laugh, Iāve done the same thing only it was in my house. š±The anchor system for TRX is pretty good. You canāt do dead hangs on it directly, but you can get pretty close. And there are lots of other exercises you can do with it and itās a great tool and easy to travel with.
And of course you can always do Burpeeās (sorry, I had to say that to yank Kyleās chain)
Thank you Kyle your support is so valuable.. Strength of mind and body is what we all require.
Thank you Debbie šš»

Haha youāre young at heart and mind, might as well forge that body in the same way (which you obviously already do in many ways)

Thanks Kyle, Iāll give this a think!
Love it man, I hang for a couple of minutes every time I do exercise. Helped my back so much!
Shoulders and back continuously thank me for hanging, as well as my weak ass, small hands⦠haha

āHow will you respond when you donāt feel like it?ā
(On my lap swim days which I hate):
āHey idiot! How will you feel if you skip this? Pain. Exactly. Get on it!ā
Works every time.
Really appreciate all your good guidance on small steps and disciplined progressive practice, Kyle. Persistence is key as in all important things.
I always tell myself that I never regret taking the time to exercise but I do regret it when I don't.
Great mantra Amanita!
Exactly right, Amanita! Itās the regret after that we can remind ourselves about as motivation to go ahead.
Haha I talk to myself in the same way! Love it Baird, thank you
