Ever since you were a little boy you would turn lemons into lemonade. At around 4 years old an adult acquaintance of ours was teasing you that for your birthday you were only getting sticks and rocks. You said "that's ok I'll use them as bats and balls". You have always turned what could potentially be a negative into a positive. No matter what challenge has come your way you have never felt sorry for yourself and have always found the lesson in the situation and triumphed over adversity.

So proud of you and your accomplishments.

If this is indeed Kyle's mum, hi! You quite obviously did a great job raising him. And from your anecdote about his 4th birthday, I think there's surely scope for a mother / son collaboration that could tie into resilience with real examples from Kyle's childhood.

Thank you so much. Yes I am honored to say I am Kyle's Mum. (That is what I called my mother) Well if Kyle ever wanted to I could definitely supply plenty of stories....

“I could either accept the decision and find areas of my life to shift my attention to or be miserable for the six-month recovery. I try not to choose misery whenever I can.” Such a wise perspective.

Every obstacle is an opportunity in a scary costume. It falls to us to reframe: this is scary and might undo me —> I will get the best of this and grow from it.

Thank you for writing, Kyle.

It’s all so true! Same thing happened to me…I broke my shoulder skiing in 2019, 10 screws and a plate later, I spent 9 months in physical therapy I kept going and discovered how baking and cooking became a passion basically out of necessity because it calmed me down, distressed me, took my mind off everything that was going on, since I was preparing with mostly one hand it showed me I could do it…I just couldn’t sit still I had to being doing something…little by little, I took on Yoga for strength, then weights, then went back to tennis and ski which was so relieving and just made me so happy…never stop doing!

It’s kind of sad how we had to find out by ourselves how to find ways to get the stress and frustration of the injury out…doctors and physical therapists don’t give you any advice on that, how to heal mentally not only physically…because I believe if a person is not strong mentally they can fall into depression easily after such setbacks…

Beautiful! Respect for responding to your trial in the way you did. Completely agree with your last point - the mind supports the body and vice versa. Focused effort on making each resilient encourages effective responses to inevitable trials. Thank you for sharing 👊🏻

Love it! In many ways, I responded in the way I did BEACAUSE of my family. Without that purpose, I may not have pivoted as well.

Great stuff, Kyle. "Any setback can be an opportunity." -- it's easy to see in the rearview, but so helpful when you can reframe a setback in real time. Inspiring and relatable!

Thank you! We all have setbacks. How we perceive our individual trial, however, often varies greatly. Just knowing perspective can greatly influence the response continuously prepares me for whatever is next while I also train across domains. Appreciate you guys

Well said, Kyle. We can look at the inverse: what is the point of life if not to lean into setbacks? how much do people miss out on if they do not own the worst that happens to them? Your point is ancient and profound—some of our best growth comes from the things that attempt to break us down.

Love the inverse perspective. Setbacks are often defining moments in life trajectory. Becoming more or less because of them is a choice.

"The reason? Lack of intention and mindset." So many people think they are disciplined when they are just going through the motions, adding more work is useless unless you do it with full intent!

It's really useful how you reflect on four different categories of growth that stemmed from your injury (physical, mental, spiritual, and familial). It shows how we often grow in completely unexpected ways, and that it's beautiful.
